1 John 3:11-24
I. Introduction – Loving one another is central part of the Christian life. We are able to love because the Father has loved us. Our love toward one another is an outward sign to the world of the inward change Christ has brought about in our lives. This morning we examine. 4 Truths about our love toward one another.
II. Love is a mark of true faith (vv. 11-15)
a. So do not hate, be righteous (v. 12)
b. Do not be surprised when your righteousness is hated (v. 13)
c. Love is the sign that you have been redeemed (v. 14-15)
III. Love is demonstrated through service to others (vv. 16-18)
a. Love may be demonstrated through laying down your life (v. 16)
b. Love will be demonstrated through giving (v. 17-18)
IV. Love reveals God’s process of heart change (vv. 19-22) – love reassures our heart.
a. Our heart condemns (v. 20a)
b. God is bigger and knows everything (v. 20b)
c. Our heard no longer condemns (v. 21a)
d. We are confident before God (v. 21b)
e. We can ask of God according to His will (v. 22) – when we are able to ask according to His will, we are at a place where we love one another.
V. Love is inseparable from right belief about God (vv. 23-24)
a. His one commandment: believe and love! (v. 23)
b. In this the Spirit give confidence (v. 24)
VI. Challenge – Examine your heart. Does your obedience to His command and the confidence of the Spirit confirm for you the redemption from the Lord? Do you struggle to love other Christians? What does this say about the condition of your heart?
